Access to College Events
Activities and events are typically open to the entire community and are a one-time occurrence. Examples of activities and events include Sporting events (Baseball, Basketball, Volleyball etc.) Performances (Plays, concerts, etc.) and Student Government Association (SGA) and club meetings and activities (movies, trips, lectures etc.) Disabled individuals may need adaptive equipment and or auxilliary staff to fully participate in a College Event.
Request for Event Relocation to an Accessible Facility
All new and renovated college facilities are fully accessible and compliant with ADA accessibility guidelines. However, a limited number of facilities at the college have not been renovated and their construction predates the Rehabilitation Act and the ADA and are therefore not entirely accessible. Should a disabled individual be interested in participating in an activity or event that is scheduled in an inaccessible location they may request that the event be relocated to an accessible facility.
Procedure/Requirements
1.Be a qualified disabled individual
2. Submit a request to relocate the event to an accessible facility to the Disability Resource Center (DRC) at least 2 business days before the event.
The request can be submitted by phone, fax, or mail (electronic or conventional).
Individuals are encouraged, although not required, to use the Request for Relocation to a Accessible Facility form as it insures that all the necessary information to process the request is provided.
Minimally disabled individuals making such a request need to provide the specifics of the event (identify event, date, day, time begin, time end, building, room), barrier or reason for relocation, their disability or functional limitation and contact information (name, address, phone, etc.)
Request for Event Accommodation
A facility may be in compliance with all accessibility guidelines, however, a disabled individual may still need a specialized piece of equipment or service to meet their unique needs. A computer lab for example may have an ADA/Accessible computer station with a standard set of adaptive peripherals (a large monitor, track ball, adaptive keyboard and voice syntheses), however, a disabled individual may need a more robust speech program, a left handed keyboard, or an alternate pointing device. Similarly, a hearing impaired person may need an interpreter or real time translation services to fully access the activity or event.
