Resources
Listed below are a variety of resources you may find helpful as you review and prepare for the exit exam. Be sure to read the short description below each one. Sources that are blue and underlined are web sources. Simply click on them to access the resource. Others are programs available in the writing lab. You'll need to visit the writing lab to access these materials.
Guide to Grammar and Writing
This site is a comprehensive on-line grammar review with interactive exercises and quizzes. Just select the appropriate topic from the pull-down menu.
The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation
While not as comprehensive as the Guide to Grammar and Writing, Blue Book is an excellent on-line resource for punctuation. It also covers a few finer points of grammar not addressed in the Guide to Grammar and Writing.
Relationship Word Essentials
Understanding the relationships words is crucial to succeeding on the exit exam. Be sure you know the difference among the three types of relationship words (FANBOYS, subordinators [trigger words], and transitions). You must also know what relationship each word express (cause, effect, comparison, contrast, addition, time, example, condition).
On this page is a link which provides you with the answers to the first two sections (note, though, that you will have to look them up). You should seek feedback for the other pages from either your instructor or an instructor in the writing lab.
Skills Bank
In the writing lab, there is an excellent program called Skills Bank. The Skills Bank is an outstanding resource for reviewing spelling rules, verb tense and form, proper adjective and adverb use, and pronouns (case, reference, point of view, and agreement). The Skills Bank is available only in the writing lab. It is not an on-line resource.
For Non-Native Speakers
If English is not your native language, you may find the Grammar Mastery Program and the Tutor Tapes helpful. Both of these programs are available in the lab and address some often confusing points for foreign speakers of English (such as word order, verb issues, and article use).
