Access to Success
Many Title III programs have been adopted by the College, while other projects continue in research and testing stages in collaboration with colleagues from the breadth of the College community.
Access to Success has two overarching goals
- to create a student-centered learning environment that delivers dynamic, interactive educational and developmental experiences and
- to establish a comprehensive, effective support system for students, faculty and staff that complements and enhances faculty teaching and student learning. The grant provides the human and financial resources to research, design, pilot test, evaluate, redesign and institutionalize programs and procedures that increase student success by improving academic quality and student services.

Developmental education curriculum reform and employment of innovative instructional strategies were undertaken by the College Prep English, College Prep Math, College Prep Reading, and SLS 1101 Life Skills - College Success subcommittees during the first two-and-a-half years of the grant. The best practices that resulted in increased student success are infused by faculty into all sections of these courses with continued support from Title III staff.
In place is a restructured orientation program serving first-time-in-college students in small interactive groups ending with Web registration for classes. The online orientation for transfer and for nondegree students is under development by the Orientation Cross Functional Team with Title III representation, in conjunction with the Quality Enhancement Plan.
In collaboration with College faculty, Title III staff has developed and maintain Web pages that allow prospective students to practice computerized placement testing: www.mccfl.edu/PracticeTest. Also, Student Success Resources boast 45 links to virtual tutoring and study skills sites available 24/7, accessible through the same Title III Web page.
Free workshops are offered by Title III learning specialists and staff in subject areas as well as in study skills and in anxiety reduction in the Academic Resource Centers (ARCs) on each campus.
Tutoring and study coaching by the learning specialists and peer study coaches are also available. Peer study coaches are trained through the co-op course, SLS 1949/2949 Co-op Work Experience I/II in Peer Classroom/Lab Tutoring & Study Coaching, developed by Title III and the department of social and behavioral sciences.

The Title III Web page also offers Faculty Success Resources, including the program Personal Empowerment through Type (PET) that allows matching teaching with learning styles and provides strategies for building successful collaborative learning groups. Faculty development also is supported by communication-enhancing software, the instructor improvement program Scenarios, and various workshops in innovative teaching strategies.
The Title III Career Advising subcommittee continues to reduce the number of undecided students, to expand access to career exploration opportunities, to facilitate career planning in the classroom, and to design a comprehensive educational and career planning model.
