Curriculum Policy

1.  Gordon Rule (Florida Department of Education Administrative Rule Number 6A-10.030)

The Gordon Rule applies to all students prior to receipt of an associate in arts (A.A.) degree from a public community college or university or prior to entry into upper division of a public university.  All students entering MCC under the current catalog are required to meet the Gordon Rule requirements. The Gordon Rule requires satisfactory completion, with a "C" or better, in the following courses.

  (a)  6 semester hours of math courses at the level of college algebra or higher and,

  (b)  12 semester hours of courses which include written assignments demonstrating college-level writing skills.

The Curriculum Development and Review Committee is charged with overseeing curriculum compliance with the Gordon Rule.

For further information including a list of approved courses and exceptions to Gordon Rule, see the MCC Catalog or the appropriate Department Chair.

2.  Textbooks

The choice of texts is made by the Department offering the course.  All sections of a course on each campus will use the same text.  The same text is to be used throughout the year for the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms.  When a change in text is being considered for the Fall, the bookstore personnel should be notified prior to April 1.

3.   The Syllabus

Each student should receive a copy of the written syllabus for the course during the first week of classes, preferably at the first class meeting.  This syllabus should include the following:

  (a)  instructor's name, office number, and when faculty will be available to counsel students.

Adjunct faculty should also include a mechanism for students to contact them, either by a telephone number or by a Department Office location where messages will be forwarded.

  (b)  course title and number, term and year

  (c)  course prerequisites (if applicable)

  (d)  course description from MCC catalog

  (e)  course performance standards

  (f)  textbook(s) or other required or recommended materials

  (g)   tentative schedule of activities for the semester.

  (h)   policies and procedures related to:

            (i)  attendance (see catalog)

            (ii)  withdrawal (see catalog)

(iii)  grading (i.e. test, quizzes, make-ups)

(iv)  standards of conduct (see Lancer Student Handbook)

            (v)  any other policies and procedures as provided by your Department Chair

Each course syllabus should be approved by the Department Chair prior to duplication.  A copy of the approved syllabus should then be submitted to the Department to be kept on file.

4.   Plagiarism Policy

The College does not condone plagiarism and defines academic cheating or plagiarism as follows:  the use of ideas, facts, opinions, illustrative material, data, direct or indirect wording of another scholar and/or writer--professional or student--without giving proper credit.  Expulsion, suspension or any lesser penalty may be imposed for plagiarism.
