Step 1: Download & Install Digital Audio Book Software
Install free software on the computer(s) on which you want to use the audio books. The software is available on the OverDrive Media Consolewebsite.
Step 2: Register Your Free Software
Before checking out an audio book, you'll need to register the free software. This is a one time registration for each machine on which it is installed.
OverDrive Media Console utilizes Windows Media Player® 9 Series to play audio files, burn audio book files to CD, and transfer files to portable devices. The first time that Windows Media Player attempts to open a protected file, it will alert you that a Security Update must be performed before the file may be opened. The update takes just a few moments, and is a one-time process that must be performed before Microsoft Windows Media Player will allow any copyright-protected files to be played.
Step 3: Check Out and Enjoy Audio Books
You can browse fiction and non-fiction categories, or search by author or title. When you locate a title of interest, simply add it to your Cart and check out the title. If the desired audio book is not available, you may place a hold on the title. When the book becomes available, you will receive an email indicating the audio book is available. The book will be held for you for 72 hours (starting when the notice is emailed to you).
Once you have checked out the audio book, a download page will be displayed. Click the link to download your audio book. Once the download is complete, you can close your Internet connection and enjoy your audio book offline.
Additional Information
At the end of the audio book loan period, the title will expire and be automatically 'returned' to the library. Although the audio book file will remain on your computer, it will no longer be readable. Files burned to CD or MP3 player will continue to be accessible. You can delete the file, or if you didn’t finish transferring the entire book to CD or MP3, you can reactivate the book the next time you check it out.
