Proficiency in the performance of a musical instrument is one of the chief goals for all students who plan to major in music. The Associate of Arts degree in Music requires four credit hours of Applied Music I and four credit hours of Applied Music II. Entering freshman who are not prepared for college-level Applied Music may take Preparatory Applied to develop the skills necessary for Applied Music I. Students taking Preparatory Applied music earn two hours of elective credit per semester. Preparatory Applied Music may be taken up to three times for credit. Applied I and Applied II may be taken up to four times each for credit.
Getting started
Placement into a particular level is determined by an audition with each individual instructor. Students will be given fourteen (14) private lessons lasting fifty-three minutes each during the Fall and Spring semesters. Students in the six-week summer term will be given two (2) lessons per week. Lessons during either the six-week or twelve-week summer term last sixty minutes each. Each student is responsible for arranging a weekly lesson time with the instructor. The phone numbers for all music faculty are available in the music office, room 11- 154. The student is responsible for being prompt and prepared for the lesson. If a student is ill or unable to attend a regular scheduled lesson for a valid reason, the student may make up the lesson provided prompt notification has been given to the instructor.
Recitals and exams
Entering college and transfer students will be evaluated by a faculty member and placed at the appropriate level. Students enrolled in Applied I and II are required to perform in at least one student recital per semester. Preparatory Applied students are not required to perform in student recitals, although they may do so for experience. All students are required to take a final exam at the end of the term. Exams for Applied Preparatory instruction may be given one-on-one by the instructor. Applied I and Applied II students are required to present a jury examination for the appropriate music faculty. Jury examination is also required when Preparatory students apply to qualify for Applied I. Upon successful completion of a performance examination (jury) by the area applied music faculty, acceptance to the next level of study is granted. Jury examinations are scheduled during final exam week. Check the bulletin board across from the music office toward the end of semester for sign-up times.
